Showing Vs. Telling - Clutter Checklist

Things that clutter your ms:
  • repetition of words
  • unnecessary dialogue tags
  • too many adverbs
  • too many adjectives
  • information that doesn't move the story forward
  • characters that don't move the story forward
These things impede the flow and usually they are "telling" the action.

HOMEWORK:

Pick up a book by a good author. (This is in your opinion.) Go through it and see if you can find places where the author obviously chose another word instead of repeating one that they'd already used recently.

I'm going to participate in this, too. ;) I'll post some examples I found.
