Briana,
Here's a tough question. I currently work a halftime job and write half time. My goal is to make enough money with writing that I can quit my day job. Bet you never heard that one before!

Anyway, with magazine writing I'm already halfway there. I'd like to fill the rest of my time with romantica writing.
My question is, how realistic is this? Is it possible to make a moderate income (say $2000 a month) from writing romantica? I know this all depends on my output, talent, marketing skills, etc., but is this even a realistic goal?
I've heard some of the superstars out there are making a very good income, but what about the midlisters? I'd love to be a bestselling romantica author (whoa! another shocker!) but I realize that if I get anywhere I'll be in the midlists for quite some time before that happens.

This is a hard question to answer because I don't know the specifics about royalties. I do know that with an established backlist, the sky is the limit, at least at my company.
EC's books are released in print and are found at Borders, Waldens, and a great deal of independent bookstores, with many exciting new venues to come. This allows you to garner royalties both in electronic release and print, without additional writing or editing output on that release.
The EC books are VERY popular at the chain bookstores and the growth is exponential. Likewise, the electronic sales are very strong. Authors report huge growth to their mailing lists, fan mail, etc, so it is clear that the company's visibility is growing by leaps and bounds.
In the next couple of months some truly incredible things will be happening that will boost our profile even further, meaning added visibility for the authors and stronger sales.
My roundabout answer is yes it could be possible with EC. We have more than a few authors who write full time with EC and live comfortably on their royalties.
Unfortunately, I can't give you any information on the possibility of doing so with other publishers.
Hope this helps!
