  1. The bit that confused me most about Monica's storyline was that she met Victor before her husband died / was killed and therefore before she stole her sister in law Monica's identity. So did Victor first meet her as Lauren or Monica? Did she lie about her name with him from the outset? Also Jackson's death was ruled inconclusive therefore why did she have to steal Monica's identity? She wasn't being accused of anything so why change her name? Also if trying to hide her identity why give Eva her name "Lauren Trammell"? Surely it makes far more sense to give Eva the Reyes name. It covers her tracks better Victor wanted her to have his name Why would she fight to give her daughter the name of the man who abused both her and her sister? The man she killed? Why not give Eva the Reyes name and drop the Trammell as soon as she remarried? It doesn't make any sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Â
  2. Agree completely Sharonm745, this was how I took Gideons statement also. That they would still cuddle etc the way they do in the back of the Bentley but that they would be more discreet than usual if Victor were driving the limo!Â
  3. I think I have figured out my main problem with the Monica storyline, aside from it being overly complicated... The placement was poor. The last 20% of this book and therefore the entire series about Eva and Gideon centred around Monica and her death and her past. For 2 books we were building toward the second wedding and their happily ever after, and instead we got a sudden death, shock reveals about Monica, Christopher, Anne etc... That by the time I was reading the final page and should have been clutching the book to my heart in delight, instead my mind was still churning over the overload of information about Monica and it fell flat... If the backstory etc was kept the same but Monica had been killed sooner, it would have given me (and Eva & Gideon) more time to process this information. Their HEA would have felt more real because I had so many silly frustrations with Eva's reaction to losing her mother. Where was their guilt over the fact that the gunman was aiming for them? This was barely touched. Gideon spent almost an entire chapter agonising over lying to Eva and she barely reacted to that etc.... They just seemed to move on rather quickly for people who lost someone in such a sudden and tragic way - baring in mind that the epilogue takes place approximately 3 weeks after Monica is killed!! Also the sheer volume of information revealed and loose ends that are tied up in that 20% was excessive! Monica's entire life story Anne's plan Christopher's backstory Cary / Trey Victor moving to New York Gideon / Christopher does anyone agree? Do you think the placement of this storyline so close to the end could have had an impact on your feelings about this book?Â
  4. The further into Captivated I get the more quotes I find and the more frustrated I get... Still, the apartment would always be a special place to me. I would never forget the way Eva had looked the first time I'd come over. Naked beneath a thigh-length silk robe, her face made up for the night ahead, a diamond anklet winking at me. Teasing me. I had lost all rational thought. I'd put my mouth on her, my hands all over her, and my fingers and tongue inside her. I hadn't even thought about getting her to the "fuckpad." I wouldn't have been able to wait, even if I had. She wasn't like any woman who'd come before her. Not just because of who she was, but also because of who I was when I was with her. I mean seriously??!Â
  5. Yes exactly Socal! I said myself yesterday the point was a valid one it just could have easily been achieved without contradicting essential elements of Gideon's character. Here is another quote from Captivated with You that is inconsistent with that photo. But my angel was a dangerous lover, one who got off on the thrill of being this close to discovery. I would never have known I enjoyed that edge if not for her. There it is in black & white direct from Gideon' thoughts... How did the editors miss that?Â
  6. Gideon is a man who is always in control, in all areas of his life, but especially in sexual scenarios. It does not fit into any part of his persona described in books 1-4 that he would be so lost in a sexual encounter with these women that he would be unaware of someone taking his photograph if there was only supposed to be the 3 of them in the room. It was also stated repeatedly that he only ever had sex at the hotel room "fuckpad" and as he rarely had full sex with these women, it stands to reason that he meant these kind of sex acts... Im sorry, nothing anyone can say will convince me that this behaviour was inkeeping with Gideon's character. The seperate bachelor / bachelorette parties I can maybe accept but Gideon performing sex acts on random women in semi-public places - just no! Several times he shushes Eva for talking too loudly in public across the series but he performs sex acts where he can be seen. I just don't buy it, he's too cautious of the Cross name and far too private a man especially regarding sex!!!Â
  7. Yes eve, that is the perfect way to describe it!! This series which I have read repeatedly, and agonised over, and theorised here over, dissecting it, pulling it apart and putting it back together. It is something I have greatly enjoyed over the last few years... And it lost its magic! In fact beyond that, OWY stole the magic. I have forced myself to re-read the other books the last day or so desperately trying to reclaim the magic, and it's not really working and I am so very very disappointed!!
  8. Just to clarify a couple of things regarding VIP rooms and how they work (in the UK at least). Occasionally they are rented out / reserved for private parties, however most of the time they are simply an exclusive room or area of a club reserved for visiting VIPs. When they aren't reserved the staff decide who gets in depending on who's at the club that night - whether any celebrities are there / who's spending highly/ who's best dressed etc... We know that Gideon spent Cinco de Mayo clubbing with his friends, so it stands to reason that they were also present in the VIP section. In fact, the presence of the photographer who took that photo indicates that the VIP area was not reserved specifically for Gideon and his friends that night and therefore a number of strangers were present, and the area was not private. Finally I just found a quote from Captivated by You which confirms my belief that these actions were totally out of character with Gideon's persona... I knew my angel well. Indulging her closet exhibitionism was a complete 360 turnaround for me, and although it still amazed me when I thought about it, I didn't mind in the least. A complete 360 turnaround for him!!! This part frustrated me greatly especially because it was just so unnecessary!!Â
  9. That is true Nrock he did refer a couple of times to 'turning the tables' on sexual predators. However there is a vast difference between shushing Eva for talking too loudly and fingering a woman in public while sucking on another woman's exposed nipple. I mean this is a man who is recognised pretty much everywhere he goes and photographed on a very regular basis and ok he is in a VIP section of (likely his own) club but that still does not in any way ensure his privacy. At the very least his friends and likely the ladies that they are entertaining are there so there was at no time a guarantee of privacy, in fact it is unlikely that there was even the illusion of privacy! And actually the presence of the photographer Hall(?) makes it unlikely that the VIP section was specifically reserved for Gideon's party that night. It just seems wildly inconsistent with his character to me. A man fiercely protective of his privacy (at least before Eva)...Â
  10. This is a conversation (from Bared to You) between Gideon and Eva in a VIP section of one of his clubs. There he is afraid of being overheard simply discussing sex, but a few months before he was supposedly performing sex acts on 2 women in a similar environment! "I can't get you alone for more than a few minutes at a time." - G "Because the only thing you want to talk about is what you have to do to get laid!" - E "Christ, Eva," he hissed, squeezing my hand. "Keep your voice down!" This part of the book really frustrated me. There was no need to contradict a message that had been reinforced throughout the 4 previous books to create drama betweenGideva. It was just so unnecessary. Especially as Eva would likely have had a similar reaction to something more innocent like a woman straddling and kissing him, which would have been more realistic and true to his character.Â
  11. 2hrs 30mins left for me. Time for a power nap... ???? See you on the other side! Happy reading!!!Â
  12. Below is a direct quote from Gideon's thoughts the first time he see Corinne after her suicide attempt. Corinne's elegant blouse and trousers were notably like something I'd once seen my mother wear. - is this a coincidence or does Corinne deliberately attempt to emulate Elizabeth? Is this something she has always done? The resemblance between the 2 woman is often talked about. Having seen that tactic is no longer working, is she now trying to imitate Eva? She knows that Eva wore a red dress on their first date & clearly she caught Gideon's attention.Â
  13. And from Chapter 7, these are my notes on the first time we see Corinne from Gideon's POV. The differences between his reactions to Corinne and Eva's to Brett are what struck me most! I steeled myself to deal with my mother again. Then her head turned and I saw it was Corinne.- Emphasises just how similar these 2 women are in appearance....her eyes brightened with a look I'd come to recognise, having seen it on Eva's face. It gave me no pleasure to see that warmth in Corinne's eyes. Unease slid down my spine, stiffening my back. - Consider the difference in Gideon's reaction to affection from Corinne in comparison to Eva's reaction with Brett.I kept the glass clear and didn't remove my jacket, sending her every signal that she shouldn't settle in for long.- Eva on the other hand, having attended the video premiere with Brett, then had dinner with him and then invited him up to her apartment because she "can't think of a reason not to". How about I'm tired, goodnight. Would have been perfectly acceptable. "All these years of trying... I thought I couldn't get pregnant." - why was she trying to get pregnant by another man, even if he was her husband if she was so in love with Gideon. That would be a permanent tie to the man she doesn't love?! - Is there something else here I'm missing?"Jean-Francois told me you called a couple of times asking about me. I wish you'd called me. Or returned my calls." - 1. She's still calling him.- 2. Even after her suicide attempt, something Gideon feels at least some guilt over. He still is not willing to jeopardise his relationship with Eva by communicating with Corinne directly. Her eyes weren't the same shade of blue as my mothers, but they were close, and their sense of style was similar. Corinne's elegant blouse and trousers were notably like something I'd once seen my mother wear. - is this a coincidence or does Corinne deliberately attempt to emulate Elizabeth? "I'm very protective when it comes to her. Tread lightly."- considering this is only a week or so after Corinne's suicide attempt Gideon is still quick to make his loyalties clear. I would have expected him to treat Corinne more gently, however the way he handles it pleases me.She'd been a blind spot for me, but no longer.- I think this is why Gideon tolerated Corinne's stalkerish behaviour for so long.I wasn't normal and I didn't need to be. Eva accepted me the way I was.- this is the fundamental truth of their relationship. Understanding and acceptance of each other's pasts as well as of the person that had shaped them to become."I would have found Eva eventually. And I would've wanted her, given up everything to have her. I would have left you to be with her. The end was inevitable." - A statement like that from a man like Gideon should have been the end. Any normal person would consider that a very definitive answer even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. Corinne however is deluding herself and living in such deep denial that within minutes she's convinced he'll come back to her. "You'll regret this, and I might be too hurt to forgive you." "What do I have to live for if I don't have you?"- this statement combined with her immediate mood swing from devastated to anger indicated the suicide attempt was a deliberate ploy to guilt Gideon back to her. "What's wrong with you?" She cried. " this isn't you.""You wouldn't know." I went to the door and yanked it open. "Go home to your husband, Corinne. Take care of yourself." - harsh but again a very definitive answer. I hit the controls to frost the glass, carving out a moment alone with my wife.- Corinne was actually in his office and he didn't afford her the same level of privacy that he gives Eva for a phone call. This speaks to the level of possessiveness he feels for Eva. It also highlights the difference between Eva and Corinne as Corinne once made Eva jealous by alluding to how possessive of her Gideon used to be.
  14. And from Chapter 4:Â He loved me so much more than he loved himself. I remembered what he'd said to me once, that he'd live with me loving another man, just so long as he had me.- Eva, however, would never tolerate this in reverse. Gideon's insecurities are so much greater than hers and she needs to remember that and stop thinking it's okay for her to hurt him because she's a woman. She also needs to remember that if anyone's jealousy is greater or more justified it is Gideon's because he is not nor has he ever been in love with Corinne. Eva cannot say the same about Brett.
  15. During my re-read today I found a few notes I had made about each chapter first time round and never shared. I know we aren't about to start another chapter discussion about CBY right now but I thought some people may have some thoughts in the wait for release. Chapter 1 "Do we need to take a break already? Take some time for Kline to clear up your confusion? Maybe I should do the same and help Corinne with hers." - Gideon - if the positions were reversed Eva would have reacted in a similar way. In fact she did, she kissed Brett (same tactic) to make Gideon understand how she felt about Corinne. "Why don't you understand how much I love you? Brett's got nothing on you. Nothing." - Eva "I think of nothing but you. All day. Every day. Everything I do, I do with you in mind. There's no room for anyone else. It kills me that you have room for him." - Gideon- the contrast between these 2 statements is telling. Considering Eva's previous jealousy how can she not see the difference? Gideon clearly has much more cause to be jealous and lashing out considering she's admitting to having feelings for another man, no matter how insignificant they are when compared to her feelings for Gideon.  Reading through this forum in the last day or so it struck me that people seemed to be more annoyed at Gideon than Eva during this conversation. Clearly I had the opposite reaction! ETA These notes I found in Chapter 2 relevant to his topic. I understood that Gideon wanted to make me feel what he was feeling, so he'd leveraged Corinne against me. I'd known talking about Brett was going to be a problem, which was why I'd put it off, but I hadn't had an ulterior motive in bringing it up or when I'd kissed Brett, either. I had hurt Gideon, yes, but could sincerely say I hadn't intended to do so. On the flip side Gideon had deliberately set out to hurt me. - does he though, or was he reacting to the hurt she was causing and lashing out in return? I also think she's downplaying how she would have reacted if the tables were turned. Saying she didn't have an ulterior motive when she kissed Brett is a lie. She already admitted it was to make him understand her jealousy of Corinne. Also saying she had sincerely never intended to hurt Gideon when she kissed Brett - eh what? How did she think he was going to feel about it? Happy? And found some more notes on Chapter 3 relevant to this topic.... "Angel, you're worried. I don't think you'd sleep with him, but I do think you're anxious about crossing a line you shouldn't. You needed a strong reaction from me so you were blunt and you got it. You needed to see what it would do to me." - Gideon- A very plausible ulterior motive for Eva bringing up the conversation about Brett. Something she swore she didn't have."You manipulate me. You do things... Say things... Just to get a particular response out of me" - EvaMy arms crossed as I remembered her kissing Kline. "As do you, which we just discussed." - Gideon She faced me. "I'm allowed to, I'm a woman." - Eva- The hypocrisy of that statement baffles me. It's the core of all her anger at Gideon from this recent fight. However she can employ the exact same tactic and that's acceptable because she's a woman. Emm... NO As you can probably tell from my reading notes I was really unimpressed with Eva's attitude in a lot of this book. Right from the beginning her behaviour was frustrating me.Â
