  1. Insideofclouds,

I have heard a lot of people talk about the book Gone Girl, but no one has told me about the book or what kind of book it is or anthing. I don't want to ask you to give me a book report (unless you want to) but would love to hear a little about the book or at least what kind of book (romance, mystery, sci-fi, etc.) this book is. I have one friend who read it and all she would tell me is that it is nothing like FSOG, which really tells me nothing. I would love some info, thanks.

Well she's right! Lol its mystery and suspense. Since I suck at summarizing books without practically telling the whole story I copy and pasted the blurb from goodreads. It does a much better job than i ever could. So here ya go!

Marriage can be a real killer.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

  2. I think the criticism was due to the fact that the setting of the book was Seattle/Portland area. When I read it there were some things that confused me and then after I looked up the meanings, I thought no one born in Washington, or any where in the US would say that. I was taught in creative writing to stick with what you know so the story is realistic. If the setting were London or Toronto it would have been more realistic. That said the use of British speak was insignificant to those of us who loved the story. In my opinion, the reason the books were so well loved is because the characters were so real and loveable. These comments were usually from writers who couldn't look past the grammar, typos, setting inconsistencies, etc.

I didn't mind the british speak at all but I have criticized the books for other reasons. I also read all three.

  3. I kno I did wonder esp because of them having the same pr company but its a bit crass to do that for some extra publicity isn't it?!

I knew that relationship screamed publicity stunt... but it lasting only two weeks is weird. Hopefully he's taking a long break from dating because his turnaround time between women is rather short. How can you go from being engaged for a year and then a month or two later date a woman for almost a year break up and then a month later date another one... just an observation...

  4. Hi everyone!

After a long wait and finally being approved, i'm jumping on the bandwagon with you all :)

So here are my 2 cents on all the books:

1: Megumi being sick is not a coincidence ( at least in my mind ), because there were to many times it was mentioned for it to be "normal". Megumi mentions in book 2: Michael is such a great/nice guy, why does he need a blind date, is somethng wrong with him? or sometihng along those lines. This is said when Eva, Monica and Megumi were having lunch together. Something really strange is going on, and I don't know if it only concerns Megumi dumping Michael or that this Michael person is somehow connected with Nathan ( i know this is far fetched ) and trying to get to Eva through Megumi.

    2. Nathan being killed and the Russian mob connection... also a strange one. Gideon owns a couple of casino's and in book 3 he tries to sell 1 to get a vineyard, ( from the ex hubby of Corrine the witch )maybe he is trying to ditch a connection there? Gideon doesn't seem to do business with mobsters but still... it could be an option.

    3. Bad mom Lizzy and the ring issue... First of all, how did Gideon get that ring? Did Lizzy give it to him, did he took it , did he inherited it? We only know what that ring means to him. To a certain point i can understand that Lizzy is p*ssed off to say the least to see that ring shining on Eve's ringfinger. Especially after Eve's rant to her about the abuse, which is totally justified imho. But Lizzy is the type of person who wants to present a picture perfect family to the outside world.

    4. Magda and Corrine and Lizzy.... Well i don't trust the whole bunch. They are all one clique whatever happens. My gut feeling is, is that Magda is trying to get info out of Eve, which she tells to her mom and mom tells it to Lizzy. And Corrine... well she is just bad

    5. Eve<-->Brett, Gideon<--> Corrine... Eve is being naive in terms of Brett, she knows he wants more and still hangs out with him. Eventhough nothing happens, there is enough space to feed off for badtalk and gossip and making Gideon mad. Gideon on the otherhand is also being a complete dummy for his continues friendship with Corinne. He knows this upsets Eve and yet he does it.

    6. Monica and Victor, maybe i'm alone in this one and i don't promote polygamy, but i kinda liked it. Don't ask me why, but i think that attraction and love after 24 years is still there is kinda lovely.

Pffeew long write, sorry for that. Sorry for writing and grammar errors, I'm not a native English speaker. And sorry if some things are already covered, i didn't read the whole forum..

    Greeties Moonfeather

    Welcome Moonfeather!!

First of all dont ever be sorry about your grammar errors and such... we aren't the grammar police lol

There's one thing you said that I never thought about which is Elizabeth wanting to present a picture perfect family to the outside world. I never thought of that before!

Again... welcome and hope you have fun!

  5. Breathe Claudine.

I think Micheal is our problem here. He didnt take the rejection from both girls well I think. The little comments from Megumi make me think he has issues. And the girls are in trouble. 1 off "sick" and 1 "out of town". Very worrying.

    *calming down*

Ok good lol Yes I agree Michael may be the problem here... if not why would SD include that little comment about Megumi's roomate saying how things didnt work out between them... everything is written for a reason.

  6. Hello!  It took me forever to get registered, but I've been reading for awhile.  Loved the new book, but now the wait begins again.

Anybody think that maybe Megumi is with Martin Stanton?  He was casually seeing her roomie, Lacey, and they don't seem to mind dating men the other one has gone out with before.  Megumi was there when Eva found Victor and Monica together.  Monica's husband's nephew has been hanging around at Megumi's place.  Martin might greatly benefit financially if Monica and Richard split.  Or maybe she's thinking about blackmail?  It wouldn't be fun to be around all those rich people if you were a working girl.

    NO NOT MY MARTY!!!! lol

I will be the first one to say no I dont think she was with Martin (Marty)!

  7. I just bought Gone Girl (Gillian Flynn) and the latest Anita Blake, Vampire Slayer novel (Affliction, Laurel K. Hamilton) for next week's vacation.  I'll probably be seeking wifi mid-route for additional downloads!

I don't read any genre exclusively, but I do enjoy dipping into erotic romance occasionally.  :)

For those of you who are romance fans, a friend of mine recently published her second Harlequin Special Edition and I enjoyed it (though I would have preferred a slightly different ending).  Her name is Amanda Berry, and her two (unrelated) novels are L.A. Cinderella (great fun) and Father by Choice.  The thing I liked best about Father by Choice is that while the heroine knows exactly how she feels about the hero, he doesn't see her the same way at first.  The way he comes around to admitting to himself how he feels about her felt unusual and realistic to me.

For paranormal romance fans, a woman in one of my writing groups, Angie Fox, writes the popular Accidental Demon Slayer books and they're fast-paced fun.  A new title (My Big Fat Demon Slayer Wedding) just published.  The books are about a preschool teacher who suddenly starts seeing demons and learns that her grandmother is part of a gang of biker witches (kiss my asphalt!).  Funny.

I really enjoyed Fifty Shades (despite its literary flaws, there's a good story there, IMO) and the Crossfire books are my first experiences with Sylvia Day.  Obviously, I love them!  Thanks for all the great suggestions; I'll be working my way through some of your reading lists!

Gone Girl is really good! I know many people hated the ending though.. I was a bit annoyed with it  but got over it! lol

  8. I might be in the minority, here, but I love that we don't get to see inside Gideon's head.  So many times I'm reading along, thinking, "OK, this is terrible, there's no excuse for this," and then we later find out what Gideon was really doing/thinking/feeling (because he tells Eva part or all of it) and - click - it makes sense.  I also love the way both characters' perceptions and actions are colored by their insecurities.  The places we see Eva being an unreliable narrator are clever and well done.  IMO, these bits are what makes it so much fun to reread the Crossfire books.  A lot of authors attempt it [unreliable narrators, misunderstandings] but Day does it so very well!  I find myself nodding along rather than being frustrated.

I agree Sarah! I think since we dont get inside Gideon's head its fun to theorize things from his POV.

  9. Hey Ladies,

Did anyone else want more details on their beach wedding? Like how Gideon gave Eva the ring? Did she see it for the first time when he put it on her finger? Or after he said 'marry me' on the chaise after pulling her from the water? I'm sure we're going to get to read all the vows from their next wedding, but , idk...I kinda wanted more. Greedy, I know. I think that Gideon will design her wedding band...maybe inscribe something sweet inside.

    Hi Nathalie ,

I agree with you - it was done awfully quick and we would all like to savor the scene. This would be a perfect opportunity for you or someone else to do a fan fiction chapter and give us some more details. Anyone?

Deanna really really annoys me. I mean, it was a one night stand...how hurt could you be? What was she expecting?

    ...............

I totally understand Deanna's reaction. It's one thing to have a slam bam thank you ma'am, but he treated her with such cruel contempt. It makes my skin crawl imagining some guy treating me that way. She may have come on a little strong, but he used her to get away Ann Lucas and he didn't have to take her to his f pad and do what he did. I think Eva was revolted by his behavior and even Gideon himself felt some embarrassment over having been such a sh@t. I'd have tried to pay him back too.

I completely agree Nrock. What Gideon did was a huge ahole move and I could see it hurting Deanna the way it did because he's this wealthy public figure with so much power and maybe she was infatuated with that and then having him do that kinda burst her bubble. I bet she had this preconceived notion of how he would be, I mean come on ladies... This drop dead gorgeous wealthy and powerful man shows interest in you and you go all googoo gaga and then he's a huge ahole and treats you like s***... That sticks with you.
  10. I discovered the Crossfire series while I was browsing through Barnes & Noble, I'm always looking for and buying books. Anyway, it peeked my interest so I bought it and needless to say I devoured the book! Loved it instanstly.  I love the stuff Gideon would say....so hot! And i've been obssessed ever since.  I had actually read FSOG way before the craziness over it, I read it originally when it was a FFn.  I still like the Crossfire series better.  I love Sylvia's writting.

I love her writing too! I loved Seven Years to Sin and I don't really read historical novels and hers was great!

  12. How I discovered The Crossfire series:

Well it's a pretty boring story lol. Read FSOG trilogy in less than a week so when I was done (as much as the writing bothered me) I had withdrawal symptoms and it was pretty bad. All I could think about was that darn book lol. I called my friend to tell her I was going crazy and she told her sister. Her sister then brilliantly suggested BTY because it was similar to FSOG. So I listened to her suggestion and boy am I glad I did. I did roll my eyes a lot of times because of the similarity but in the end I LOVED it. It's everything FSOG should've been and can never be.

  13. Thank you. I was speedreading (skimming, skipping parts, looking for Gideon/Eva interaction) and should have stopped reading long before I did!

I notice there's a "Like This" button on posts in this forum. Does that feature work, and if so, does it kick in once I've been a member for longer? Every time I try to "like" someone's post, it tells me I've exceeded my quota for today (but I've never successfully liked any posts).

I don't think the like button works. I've always goten the same message every time I click it.
