Definitely agree that Corrine wasn't Mentally-Ill-With-A-Capital-M ill -- totally crazy. Nor was she Evil-With-A-Capital-E -- like Nathan and Hugh.  I don't think Corrine suffers from some chronic mental health condition.  But I do think that she was suffering a full-blown episode of mental illness: clinical depression. Her condition, it would appear, was calculatedly turned from bad to life threatening. Sorta like feeding a diabetic donuts.  That said, though, I think that all along, Corrine was capable of trying anything to keep Gideon, including playing the suicide card. I wonder, though, whether under "normal" conditions (if that's the right word) Corrine's playing of the suicide card would have simply involved verbal threats as a means of manipulation. The wrong meds simply ratcheted Corrine up to the point where she's actually do an attempt, not just talk about it.

OMG, Bared to You trivia that I didn't know. And I thought I knew the book by heart. Well played, Julie, well played indeed.  Well that changes things indeed. The GidEva Sisterhood of Snarkdom can henceforth call Elizabeth Vidal "Lizzie." -
It was way too touchy-feeley -- especially for poor Eva.  To me, it came across as Elizabeth Vidal having psychological boundary-issues that spill over into physical boundaries. Not weird in a sexual way, but weird in an inter-personal way, like she's desperate for connection and very insecure. Like Monica, Elizabeth has a full set of "issues" of her own.  Throwing out a Sylvia question - is Elizabeth Vidal still in therapy? And if it's not too much of a Book 4 spoiler -- is Dr. Anne Lucas her shrink? (Oh, I hope not)

Granted, Eva wasn't very nice the second time they met. Lizzie got a long-overdue talking to about her role in her son being damaged so badly by her (Lizzie's) refusal to believe him.  P.S. I wonder what Sylvia thinks about the snarky nickname that's spread on this site about Elizabeth. Is she laughing? Or is she saying "wow, they're a tough crowd." -

Hi Mam2e  I have a Word document with a synopsis of every chapter of Bared to You and Reflected in You.  Back when we were as a group doing the re-read a chapter per day of both books, I took on a project to create a Readers Guide cheat sheet for every chapter. It turned out to be a lot of work, but a lot of fun too.  If go back into the Re-Read A Chapter A Day thread, you can find each of the summaries. -

In one of the interviews this spring -- I'm almost certain it was that Book Nation hour-long video session -- Sylvia confirmed the point at which l u s t turned to love, for Gideon, was in the limo. The overpowering physical chemistry, which was mutual, was l u s t at first sight, but Gideon initially went into things looking for an "extended one-night-stand." -

My thought was that he was very uncomfortable and feeling put-on-the-spot by his mother: her having called him to the hospital, the presence of Corrine's parents there, Jean-Francois Giroux there too.  If the others had not been there, he probably would have resisted the hug. But given the very sad situation, he didn't want to make matters any worse by doing something guaranteed to upset his mother at a time when who knows what she might have done in response. The very last thing he wanted was any sort of scene.  So he endured it, was able to endure it because he had Eva's hand to hold onto.  Which reminds me -- Gideon was so kind to Corrine's parents, and they obviously care about him a lot. My guess is he used to spend holidays with Corrine's family rather than his own. He left home to go to college, he met Corrine his freshman year .... I can see her bringing him home for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas as a milestone for her ongoing pursuit of him. -

It's possible to trace back Gideon thinking about marriage the first week he and Eva were a couple. Sat: the first date gone wrong Sun: he tried (in vain) to talk to Eva, but she refused to answer the phone Mon: she agreed to be his girlfriend, and the night ended with him making her the first-ever woman he'd taken home Tues: things were good Wed: she told him about Nathan, and he loved her even more -- but -- it turned into a bad night with her pulling a runner because she felt he lied to her about the nightmare she'd just witnessed. Thurs: he sent her the Dear Jane note -- but -- he also went to see Stanton about Nathan, the first sign he already was planning to protect her. Plus he found out about Dr. Petersen Fri: still no contact with her, but he was hoping she'd come back. He saw Dr. Petersen to arrange for individual and couples therapy. Fri - Sat: sometime during this period, he re-created her bedroom as a safe room at his apartment and most importantly, bought her promise ring. Sunday daytime: he figured out she wasn't going to come back on her own, and so he went after her, finding her at the Vidal Records garden party. Sunday evening: he presented the ring box holding the promise ring, and as he saw a flash of panic cross her face, re-assured her it wasn't "that" ring -- he knew she wasn't ready, and he told her as much. But the clear message was that an engagement ring was in the future.  What was equally important was that when she was assured it wasn't an engagement ring in the box, her panic was replaced with a feeling of letdown. She recognized that a part of her would have been thrilled with an engagement ring. It was at that moment she understood for certain she'd already fallen in love with him. -

As part of being Captain of Team Eva, Cary has always gone back and forth on Gideon -- proof he wants Eva to be happy. From day one (actually night one -- Eva/Gideon's first date) Cary had the brotherly talk with Gideon that if Gideon hurt Eva, he'd answer to him. And after the first date went to h e l l Cary helped Eva avoid Gideon's calls all weekend so that Eva could think things through. There have been times when he's been supportive of the growing relationship between Eva and Gideon, knowing that Eva feels for Gideon like she hasn't for any other guy in the 3+ years Cary has been Eva's best friend. The violent nightmares really worried Cary, though, especially the two in which Gideon turned aggressor, both of which happened in Eva's bed. After the second nightmare, Cary went through a period of urging Eva point blank to end things for the sake of her own abuse survivor recovery. Cary went through an odd spell during the time Gideon and Eva became estranged and then Eva dumped Gideon entirely. Subtly he was pushing Brett, but mostly he was a shoulder to sob on as Eva spent two-plus weeks crying her heart out. He very much was "go gurl!!!" to the New Eva who in the final five days of Reflected. Now that in the early part of Entwined (esp. Chapter 4) where Brett has become a serious subject, Cary is being cautious. He doesn't want to see Eva go into another tailspin. Plus, of course, Cary is curious about the fact Eva obviously is getting laid again with some Mystery Man. Cary wants to make sure she's not doing so in a self-destructive way (i.e. degrading herself) -

Ireland has been on Team Eva from day one -- and it's apparent Ireland was one of the few people Gideon talked about Eva with during their separation (I'll bet the others were Angus and on a limited basis Dr. Petersen). Â I wonder how Corrine handled Ireland and vice versa as Corrine tried ingratiating herself with the Vidals. Maybe tried seeking re-assurance that she (Corrine) and Gideon were going somewhere. Wanting Ireland to boost Corrine's wishful thinking and delusions. Â But I can see Ireland being forthright to the point of bluntness with Corrine that it was obvious Eva was something special to Gideon. Hopefully, Ireland was a reality check for Corrine trying to seek any sort of re-assurance she (Corrine) had a shot at Gideon, with Ireland telling Corrine the truth - she (Ireland) can't foresee anything other than friendship between Corrine and Gideon. Whatever had gone wrong with Eva, it's obvious Gideon loves her and misses her -- and Ireland wants to see those two get back together. Â I can also see Ireland chewing her big brother out every time he went out with Corrine, telling him straight up that he'll never get Eva back unless he stops giving people the impression he and Corrine are a couple. -

In Bared to You, I think initially Elizabeth was thrilled to me Eva because of the opportunity Eva presented for her (Elizabeth) to possibly get back into Gideon's life. Eva was the first woman since Corrine that Gideon showed any serious interest in -- for the first time ever, Mr. Celebrity is being photographed being passionate with a woman, a far cry from the mask he wears while escorting brunette arm candy on red carpets. Â I'll bet Elizabeth thought that if she could get Eva to like her and they could become close, Eva could become the bridge over the gap between Elizabeth and Gideon. Which is ironic, because that's actually what might ultimately happen. Â Exit Eva mysteriously from Gideon's public life and enter Corrine. Ah hah!!!! An even better opportunity!! Obviously, the two women had some shared history from years ago when Corrine was Gideon's fiancee. There is some sort of connection too between the Vidals and Corrine's family. Â So desperate-to-get-Gideon-back each in her own way, the two women must have latched onto one another. Foolish Corrine had no idea the reasons why Gideon doesn't love his mother. Why would Corrine? It took a lot of prodding by Eva to get Gideon to explain why to her (Eva). Obviously, he never explained anything to Corrine. Â When Eva went after Elizabeth, it was at a time when Elizabeth (and everyone, even Eva herself) believed that Corrine and Gideon were reunited. I'll bet Elizabeth came away from that confrontation even more determined to be on Team Corrine. I wonder whether the women compared notes of what Eva pulled Saturday night with Elizabeth and then Tuesday morning when Eva went after Corrine. Â I'm convinced that when Gideon turned icy on the phone with Corrine warning her to not take a certain tack with him, Corrine was trying to play the family card. Â Elizabeth's desperation led her to call Gideon to the hospital despite the fact Elizabeth had to have known by then Gideon had cut off contact with Corrine (something Gideon did after he found out about Stunt #2 Corrine pulled to try to drive Eva away forever by messing with Eva's insecurity/jealousy vulnerabilities). Even Christopher somehow knew Gideon had tried cutting off Corrine completely (based on the snark Christopher said in Times Square about Gideon not wanting to talk to Corrine but then sending Corrine a mixed message by going over to Corrine's apartment). Â Which leads up to Elizabeth confronting Eva after Elizabeth learned Eva and Gideon were engaged. Her fear Eva is going to take her son away from her, I think, is Elizabeth's fear that Eva somehow is poisoning Gideon against his mother permanently by feeding into "lies." Elizabeth is going to need to finally get it that Gideon was in fact, telling the truth!!! -

It just occurred to me that as soon as Corrine becomes medically stable enough to leave intensive care, she'll possibly (I say probably) be transferred to psychiatric inpatient care. If it's true Dr. Anne Lucas was feeding her inappropriate types and/or dosages of anti-depressants -- to a pregnant patient no less -- then Lucas is likely going to end up in serious trouble.  Because she'll be coming under the care of a new psychiatrist during her inpatient stay, one who almost certainly is going to go over Corrine's recent history.  Major medical practice suit is one possibility, as might be actions concerning Anne's medical license.  I'll bet Anne wasn't counting on Corrine surviving. -

The biggest reason Eva and Cary are going to San Diego is for Cary to be able to talk with Dr. Travis about his (Cary) learning Tatiana is pregnant. Â I'm hoping that Eva seeing Dr. Travis while there will be the thing she needs to get her head on straight about Brett, making it simple for Eva to do what needs doing -- letting Brett go completely. Hopefully, Dr. Travis can make her see what's really going on is that Eva is subconsciously punishing Gideon over Corrine. Eva needs to work out her very justifiable anger at Gideon the right way. Â Brett is one of the reasons Eva ended up as Dr. Travis' patient 3+ years ago. Victor could see there was something wrong inside Eva -- she was an angry wild young woman sleeping around with men bad for her, including some local rock band singer (Brett) and some tattoo artist who was cheating on her (out on patrol, Victor caught the guy getting a blow job from another woman while driving.) Reflected suggests those two guys were the final straw for Victor. -

It was never real to him, because he never meant for it to ever be over. Unfortunately for him, their second break-up, like the first in Bared to You, was very real to Eva.  In Reflected, he repeated in a far more serious way the same mistake he made in Bared to You, when he sent Eva an inter-office envelope containing her set of apartment keys she'd loaned him, and accompanying the keys with a "Dear Jane" note. Because he couldn't handle her having pulled a runner after for the first time she witnessed a full-fledged nightmare of his (one in which he was in his role as victim instead of aggressor.) He didn't get it that the reason she stormed out of his place clad only in a bathrobe was she felt he way lying to her. He was convinced she left because what she'd seen disgusted him.  That time, they were apart for four days, all the time him hoping she would come back. He went to see Stanton about Nathan, arranged for him as an individual and them as a couple to become patients of Dr. Petersen, replicated her bedroom in his apartment as a safe room she could retreat into if she needed space, even bought her a promise ring. But finally by day four, he realized she wasn't coming back, not on her own, so he ended up chasing her and begged her to take him back.  In Reflected, he simply meant to create distance between them. But he learned the hard way that trying to control another person (here Eva by emotionally manipulating her) doesn't work and can backfire horribly. Unforeseen circumstances happened, like her finding out about those rape photos. It always had been a possibility, but he obviously banked on it not happening. Never could he have foreseen the consequence - her self esteem problem made her believe he couldn't get past disgust of her now. Yet again, too -- and he ought to have known better -- he vastly underestimated how badly she would react to him taking Corrine out. She believed the worst. She ended it, and though she loved him still, she wasn't waiting for him, wasn't trusting him -- she was going to move on.  In light of all that, I found this chapter especially sweet. Sexually, she took him back to an ordinary starting line -- him as some regular guy having met a new woman he's had over for dinner the first time, the big question being would it be the first time they'd go to bed with one another ... her letting him get "lucky." It's an experience he never got -- not with Corrine in the hotel room nor all the random woman he took there over the years since then. -

When Eva and Gideon are teasing about him being allowed to "put it in" it's as if they're older teens or very young adults having intercourse for the first time in a relationship -- especially if it's the first time ever for the girl, "giving up" her virginity. -

Good morning, Julie! Â "Suck face" is in the same league as your British term "snogging." I first came across the word snogging in the Harry Potter series, somewhere around the 4th or 5th book, where Harry and his friends had become teen-agers, old enough to be kissing other teens. Â "Suck face" is something American teens might say. Eva's being very playful here, like she and Gideon are much very younger and inexperienced, have just started going out, and are deciding just how far to go at this early stage - just kissing, petting (running hands over one another while kissing), "heavy petting" (skin to skin contact), "all the way" (meaning some form of intercourse) Â Another popular system American teens would use to describe how far they go uses sports analogies - our national sport of baseball, where there are three bases plus "home base". Scoring points (runs) involves a player running all three bases and then running across the home base. Â First base - French kissing and petting over clothing Second base - skin to skin contact above the waist (especially a boy getting to touch a girl's b r e a s t s) Third base - skin to skin contact below the waist Home base - (also called home run) "going all the way" intercourse. -

On we go with our deep-dive into one chapter per day. How it works:  We're trying to avoid mentioning anything that happens beyond today's chapter. The idea behind sticking to just the chapter -- plus anything coming before it -- is that fans still reading the novel can start talking about early chapters without coming across stuff from later in the book they haven't read for themselves yet, stuff that might spoil surprises of what's to come - "spoilers". Pick a favorite quote or paragraph -- oh h e c k pick plenty: it's so hard to choose sometimes. Sylvia started the pick a quote (or paragraph) system when she started the group effort to re-read one chapter per day of Bared to You and Reflected in You. Have fun!!! (That's the real easy part!) -

I too hate to think he'd be that ruthless .... but look at how ruthless he was to Eva herself. How he treated THAT week still makes my blood boil, especially right to her face in that business meeting. And I think about how desperate he was.  Even while he was ruthless to Eva, inside he hated every second of it -- hated himself for hurting her. I think inside he similarly hated himself for hurting Corrine. But I still think he was capable of doing it -- of doing anything THAT week, in order to take care of Nathan forever and make absolutely certain that if he went down in legal flames, Eva wouldn't go down with him.  BUT ....  OK, I'll give Our Hero the benefit of the doubt here. Maybe he wasn't counting on Lizzie gossiping to Corrine. But I'll bet he wasn't counting on the Lizzie-Corrine Codependent Sisterhood either. -

Very good point. Which makes me wonder exactly when did he ask for the ring?  Even while he'd been keeping himself away from Eva, he'd been making plans for the day they would be getting back together. I wonder whether it was when he resumed going out with Corrine that he asked his mother for the ring -- determined in his own mind that as soon as he could do it, he was going to fall down on his knees to Eva begging for forgiveness, ready then and there to ask her to marry him as proof of his devotion.  Because Eva wasn't ever supposed to know the real truth about how Nathan died. Gideon's original plans must have had to involve winning back Eva by proving to her he loved her and her alone -- hench proving to Eva that she, not Corrine, is the one he wants to marry.  Now if I'm right on this timing .... it was while Gideon and Eva were apart that he obtained the engagement ring (and probably that photo of him and his father on the beach, the photo he promised in North Carolina he'd get from his mother, who had it) .... well ... how much you want to bet Lizzie told Corrine that Gideon asked for the engagement ring.  I suppose it's even possible that Gideon counted on his mother telling Corrine about the ring .... part of his deliberately sending Corrine mixed messages. If that's true, that's pretty d a m n cold. Yes, Gideon was desperate -- desperate to protect Eva from the police -- but it still doesn't excuse him brutally using Corrine. -
