What I always come back to is, why didn't Christopher Snr adopt Gideon, giving him his surname. Was it him or Lizzy? I've got a feeling it's Lizzy. As you say, he comes across as decent, even Gideon has a fair business relationship with him. Oh roll on 2014 our agony will be over.

Hi ladies. I have always looked at Geoffrey Cross' character as being loosely based on Bernie Madoff. Now Ponzi schemes normally fall under the Federal Government jurisdiction so that is the same state to state. Now Bernie was sentenced to 150 years for his crimes. Even with time off for good behavior he would have never taken a breath of fresh air as a free man again.

 

As far as Vidal Sr. I go back and forth. I really had assumed that he and Lizzie were having an affair while Geoffrey was alive. My opinion changed on that front a bit with EWY. I walked away from that book thinking much like Sharon he's a decent guy, but spineless.

I agree Geoffrey is based on Madoff but Madoff was convicted using current laws.  Twenty years ago I don't think these guys were sentenced as strictly.  There are a lot of men who received much lighter sentences for Ponzi type schemes.  Wasn't there a big company in the 80s that used some scheme and the men responsible received very light sentences. It seems that a lot of these crooks get off easy. Who knows maybe we will learn more in the next two books. Regardless Geoffrey was a crooks and coward and took the coward's way out.  It must be difficult for Gideon to grow up with that hanging over his head.

In the UK prisoners get parole after doing two thirds of their sentence, Geoffrey could have been out by the time Gideon was say 18? If the same applied in the USA .

Was the humiliation and ruination to much for Geoffrey? I think Lizzy knows. Why did she marry so quickly after his death, was she having an affair with Vidal?

 

Julie,  There isn't a rule regarding 2/3 of the sentence served as far as I know but every state is different. (It is a shame LN isn't here she could let us know about the NY laws for this type case.) Some people get out after serving as little as a year to 18 months.  I think it depends on the sentencing guidelines. I know sentencing guidelines seem to be lenient for white collar criminals. Regardless I agree if Geoffrey went to jail he would have been out and still have skills and time to start over.

 

Since he committed suicide it seems he couldn't deal with the humiliation and negative publicity. He would lose most of his wealth as part of his sentence and Liz would most likely divorce him.  Gideon commented on the fighting I don't see her sticking around while Geoffry rebuilds his life. 

 

My guess is Liz remarried so quickly to change her name and escape some of the negative publicity.  I don't know if she was having an affair but I'm sure she knew Vidal and he married her to help insulate her from the publicity.  Everything I've read about Vidal Sr. makes me think he is a good guy but a little spineless.

I don't think they would screw with a little boys head and say his father shot himself in the head only to have gone to prison. I really don't think Sylvia would go that way

I never said she did I answered the question how long do people go to jail for Ponzi schemes.

We know Gideon has a special trust fund for the people that were conned. Eva told Ireland to tell her boyfriends grandparents to look into it.

I think there is more to come out about Geoffrey's death.

 

I did a quick search and most US Ponzi schemers get up to 20 years but they all were paroled much sooner.  He was a young man so he could make a comeback.  Also they are confined in low security prisons so, while prison is terrible they aren't with harden criminals.

Going off at a tangent.

Geoffrey death has always bothered me. Was it suicide or murder?. I'm sure it would help Gideons abandonment issues if Geoffrey was murdered. Re: Gideons comments about Hugh's son in Entwined.

I maintain Geoffrey was murdered by an investor to his Ponzi scheme, and Gideon found the body.

 

Conspiracy theory.  I don't know I think it was suicide.  Often the family of suicides want it to be murder because they don't want to believe their loved one would kill himself.

Gideon does mention that He(Gideon) was left alone with Hugh not We(Gideon and Chris) more and more. I couldn't see Hugh raping Gideon with Chris in the room. Because his nightmares tell us this happened in BTY.

How much of his abuse will he tell to Eva and Dr Petersen?

 

You're right there is no way that Hugh would rape Gideon with a witness.  I think Dr. Petersen will pull out the information.  I remember Gideon mentions how Dr. Petersen can talk him around a circle until he gets him where he wants him.  (Not a quote)

I wouldn't say Gideon sees him as an employee, as such. But he definitely is a friend confidante, and above all the only father figure Gideon has known.

He knows what Gideon thinks and what he wants. Spelling it out for Eva on a couple of occasions ie the concert and the hospital.

I reckon Angus saved Gideons life regarding his abuse.

 

Julie that reminds me I always thought Angus put an end to Hugh's abuse too.  That kind of kills my theory that Hugh moved onto Chris Jr.  Angus is a good man and wouldn't leave Hugh around to hurt anyone else. If Chris was abused by Hugh it was before Gideon left home.  However, like Gideon said "He takes sibling rivalry to the extreme."  Chris is most likely very jealous of Gideon because Gideon is more successful in all areas.

I think she would have made a great high class escort Sharon. That's how she met her millionaire husbands.

Angus has stepped up to the plate for Gideon.

He has been with Gideon for many years, he has been Gideons father figure. He is Gideons confidante.

That's why he was at the wedding.

Never diss our Angus.

 

You are absolutely correct Julie.  Angus is the strong male figure in Gideon's life.  He will help Eva help Gideon.

I know we are all emotionally attached to Gideon and Eva's story but lets keep the forum a nice happy and light hearted place for everyone to post on!!

I thought a snippet would help as I wait for Captivated but it only makes me want it more.

I thought that maybe Will was brought in to keep an eye on Eva, not sure if it was Gideon that sent him though.  He showed up right when Eva and Gideon 'broke up'.  I think Gideon would have sent a female to keep tabs, so someone else sent him maybe?

 

I don't think he is a Gideon plant because of the reaction he had to Gideon when Eva stayed in the elevator.  (When Gideon gave her the ring back)  If he was a plant he wouldn't have reacted to Gideon asking Eva to stay.

 

I still think Will is just a co-worker.

Someone mentioned a while back that maybe Lizzy's ring was auctioned off when her husband got in trouble for the Ponzi scheme(b.c they lost all of their money), and somewhere down the road, Gideon bought it back. I like that Idea too b/c then he has something nice from when his parents were together and they were all happy. Happy memories to give to Eva. And he wouldn't have needed to ask his mother for it...ask her for anything. Ughh...not a fan of that woman.

 

Anne skeeves me out...big time....She's just a whole lot of trouble. I don't understand hers and Lucas's marriage...I don't know how he could still be w/ her. She still cheats on him! Who knows, maybe he does the same and they really don't love each other as much as Gideon thinks they do. Maybe they stay together for show. She hit on Gideon, not the other way around.

 

I think Will is just a co-worker too.

True but Cary still chats w/ him...through Skype I think?

 

This is the theory that I like best about the ring.  It would make it more precious to Gideon & Eva.

 

I agree with Anne/Terry marriage.  Anne is a loose cannon.  She is up to no good.

 

Cary chats with Will?  Cary chats with him because he was a patient.  I don't think he will take on a new older  patient .

I think Gideon knows that he has more crap to lay on Eva and just needed that marriage to insure her being with him.  He asked her what she needed to know before they got married.  She asked a few questions but I think there are tons more that will come up.  G knows she is gonna have a lot more to deal with.  I think Deanna is just the tip of the iceberg.

 

I love the ring idea.  I think Lizzie made up her mind that G was gonna ask Corinne and let him have the ring.  I think she probably almost dropped dead when she saw it on E.  That makes me happy.

 

Dr. Terry and his nutso wife Anne are gonna cause a lot of grief for G and E.  They are in this together to make the Crosses miserable.  I don't for one minute think that the Lucas marriage is a happy one.  I think both partners blame G for that.  

 

Still not sure where Hugh comes in on this.  I feel there is a connection.  Also wonder---Why is Will a character in this book?  He seems to have no place here.  Could he be Hugh's son or family member?  As of now, he is a throwaway character and Sylvia does not do that.

 

I don't think he is a throw away character.  He was there to keep Eva busy while she was dealing with her breakup with Gideon.  I also think it is one more person who makes her love her job so much.  She works well with her co-workers and Gideon is going to have to do something big to get her to pull away from them and work for him.

Reading the prenup again, you get the feeling that G knew how bad things were going to get. He said himself he was so scared of messing it all up and that E would want to do a runner. I think he knows he's going to have to deal with his demons and what it will do to him - he just wanted to anchor E to him in any way possible in the hope that at the end she might still be there.....so that he gets a chance to pick up the pieces and hopefully put it all back together again.

 

 

I think you are right.  Gideon told Eva that we she questioned if he thought the document would keep them together.

I have thought about this a little more as I am reading thru the books again. It occurred to me that Gideon does not seem to know that Christopher may have been abused too. But Lizzie said to Eva that Christopher was there and denied that Gideon was abused. The more I consider this, I think both Gideon and Christopher were abused and neither realize that the other one was. Further, I think that Christopher blames Gideon for his abuse since Gideon's behavior brought Hugh into their lives (even though Christopher was acting up also!). Gideon was about 10 and Christopher would have been 5. Both were manipulated and intimidated by Hugh and are suppressing the events. I think this, besides normal sibling rivalry, is why Christopher so hates Gideon.

One other point... When Lizzie saw her ring on Eva, she freaked out. Do you think Gideon asked her for the ring while the world thought he was back with Corinne and when Lizzie saw it on Eva she didn't know how to handle it?

 

I also think some of the anger is because Hugh abused Christopher but I don't think it was while Gideon was still at home.  Abusers rarely change their preference and if Hugh likes pre-teen/teen boys he wouldn't be interested in Chris jr. until he reached that age.  My guess is he blames Gideon for leaving.

 

We talked about the ring before and I'm not sure what the story is.  I think Liz was hoping for Corrine as a daughter in law but I'm wondering if Gideon had the ring for a long time.  We will see.

I just finished reading the Kalypso Masters series.  I have to say it was a fabulous read!!  The material was real well researched and presented in a very respectful manner.  If everyone gets a chance, they might want to give these books a read.  Thanks for your suggestion ladies!

I agree GiGi.  I don't know if I told you this already but I sent a message to Kalypso about the next book.  She is hoping to get it out by the end of the year but she is dealing with some personal issues and she has a new grand child that put her off schedule.  She said it will be here soon.

Let me just throw this into the mix ........

 

Do we think that Anne now knows what her brother did to Gideon??  I think her anger is strictly based on being dumped.

 

No I think Anne is out for revenge because Gideon dumped her when she was ready to leave her husband.

 

Does anyone think Anne or Dr Terry know that Gideon found Hugh and threatened him?  We haven't received that information.  My guess is the only way they would know is if Hugh left a suicide note.  If he has we haven't seen it yet.

 

Did Dr Terry confront Hugh after the exam ?  and then would Hugh tell Dr T that Gideon figured out reason for the lies ??  Good question.

 

We know that Dr Terry knew, but only because Elizabeth went to him for the exam and that he lied to 'protect' Anne and in doing so also protected Hugh - but since he is a kids Dr, how did/does he rationalize allowing an abuser to continually treat kids and abuse them.  It appears he (and Anne) supports all the abuse based charities and is respected in his field.  So lots of contradictions in their live beyond the affair.  Gideon said he understands why he did it because Terry must love Anne as much as Gideon loves Eva.

 

In regard to Hugh's son, other than Gideon's own guilt over another child damaged by suicide, I don't see any connection.  At this point the secret of Hugh's actions are dead and buried. Agree. 

 

Sharon,  let me qualify a little here...  I didn't mean to suggest that Gideon would purposely abuse, but rather that he may have been caught in a nightmare and abused.  Now, the more I think about it, I don't know that I think that at all.  I was not meaning to suggest that Gideon would abuse, not consciously. 

 

I understand.  I can't see Gideon sharing a room with his brother.  They live in a mansion and I'm sure each child has his own room. I guess it is possible but I don't see it as part of the story.  Hopefully we will know soon.

Has anyone considered that sex abuse survivors often turn into abusers themselves? I think that Hugh abused Christopher as well as Gideon. But did Gideon abuse Christopher also and not remember it? Is that why Christopher hates Gideon so? Or is it just because Gideon's acting out brought Hugh into their lives and introduced the abuse? What do you think?

 

 

Avid-Reader I had said the same exact thing a while back its the only t hing that explains why Chris Jr would hate him so and Giedon dosent remember I think Lizzy knows something and is keeping it a secret ..A lot of people disagreed with me so I'm glad u brought it up..its the only thing I could see Eva saying its something she don't think she could handle and is testing her ( not extact words) That would be something I could not deal with.. And as for her saying she feels he's slipping away he proubly can't deal with it so he shuts down..that's why she she says at the end that there future seems dim now.

Let me begin by saying that I do not mean to offend anyone and this is my opinion only. We come up with all kinds of theories and anything can happen. (No one expected the Russian mafia twist or the bracelet alibi.)  In no way do I mean to disparage anyone’s opinion by stating mine. 

 

I have to address this theory.

 

I did a paper for school on sexual abuse and have a lot of research.  One of the reasons so many men do not come forward and report and deal with their abuse is for this reason.  There are a large number of people who think men who are abused will abuse in the future.  That is just not true.  The reverse is rarely considered.  By that I mean women are rarely labeled as potential abusers because they were abused.  Men fear that admitting abuse will make people look at them differently and people will constantly be waiting for them to abuse another child.

 

There are more than 138 million men in the U.S  As Sylvia documented in her book one in 6 boys are abused that would mean approximately 23 million men are potential abusers.  What a shame that as a society we continue to abuse these men by continuing to posit this theory.  It is true that many abusers were abused but the majority of abused boys do not abuse others. Sylvia said she did a lot of research for this book and she would know this myth is false.  It is documented in all the major psychology magazines.

 

Regarding the Crossfire series and Gideon Cross in particular, I would never recommend these books in the future if Sylvia made the decision to have Gideon be an abusive murderer.  It doesn’t fit with the person in my mind. 

 

There are many reasons why Christopher doesn’t like Gideon, jealousy being the first one that comes to my mind.  I know families where siblings have issues with one or another and I don’t know any who abused the other.  I firmly believe that Christopher is angry with himself because he saw the abuse and didn’t confirm Gideon’s accusations. 

 

Another reason could be he blames Gideon because Hugh turned to Christopher after Gideon left.  Abusers have a type and if Gideon left home in 5 or 6 years then Christopher would be Hugh’s type.  How could Christopher report his abuse when he denied that Hugh was an abuser? 

 

I won’t even consider this scenario until I read it.

I agree with you. The journey is going to be difficult but i think they will go on it together. With many heated arguments and lots of sex
