  1. Hi Everyone, I looked at everyone’s postings and I wonder what Carey’s motivation is as far as his omission of information at crucial times? He didn’t tell Eva about Brett and that fact that his group had changed their name and signed with Vidal Records. He didn’t tell her about Golden Girl either. Why? Is Carey just mischief making or does he have ulterior motives? Is Carey really supportive of Eva and her relationship with Gideon? Does he think that Brett really is the better option? Does anyone have any theories?
  2. Hi LNCronan, I find your Detective Graves feeding Eva’s dad information slowly intriguing. I still don’t think that Victor would be receptive in the least or helpful with Detective Graves. There is an old saying “Don’t shoot the messenger†but somehow whatever detective Graves intentions may have been, I don’t think that she would get anywhere with that approach. I also think that if push came to shove and the good detective spilled the beans, Eva would eventually find out. Faced with absolutely no other options, I could see Eva then going to her dad and telling him about everything including that little conversation the good detective had with her in the Krav Maga Studio. At that point it would be game over.
  3. Hi ShazScott1980, I hope that Victor has a more significant role in the next book, but I really hope that Victor didn’t know about Eva’s abuse all these years. As a human being I would seriously end up disliking Victor in the worst way. I have a hard time believing that Victor would have been ok with Monica’s explanation that she had no idea that her daughter, who was living under her roof, was being raped. We are not talking about a single mother that couldn’t be at home, who was holding down several jobs to try and make ends meet (so that she could keep a roof over her daughter’s head and food in her stomach). Monica was/is a socialite who would have had no other job than to look after her daughter and please her husband. If Monica’s actions (or lack thereof) were any indication, pleasing her husband wound up being her only priority. Once a person chooses to become a parent, they are supposed to shift focus from themselves to their child. In this case Monica didn’t do that. Wouldn’t Victor wonder who was tucking this little girl in every night? Wouldn’t he wonder if Monica was paying attention to her daughter when they sat around the dinner table? Why didn’t Monica notice a change in Eva’s behaviour? I would think that as a cop, Victor would have seen the horrors of abuse and I am not so sure that he would have been able to give Monica a complete pass without any judgment what so ever. It wouldn’t make sense to me if he did. On the other hand it could be argued that Victor loves Monica so much that he forgave her for her neglect. It would just be difficult for me to believe. It would also open up a whole host of questions for me. Why did Victor choose this weekend to kill Nathan? How did Victor make it to New York undetected, kill Nathan and then back to San Diego only to come back to visit his daughter? How would he account for his time in travel and wouldn’t that set off huge alarm bells from a cops’ perspective? What would Victor’s alibi be? I can’t see Victor committing a crime without having some kind of alibi in mind before hand. Personally I can see Victor helping to cover Nathan’s murder, but I can’t see him committing the murder himself without a whole host of other criteria being in place first. If that was the case, this storyline would wind up being very cluttered and difficult to follow. I am not sure how Sylvia would go about tying all of the loose ends together. What do you think?
  4. Hi KiMa, I like your theory about Gideon and the "orgy" guy. In the first book Eva described the guy's pupils as being dilated which would make me think that he was "high" on something. I guess the question will become, just how high was the "orgy" guy and can he really be trusted to accurately identify Gideon? What do you think?
  5.     Hi AMC, How do you think that Sylvia's definition fits into this entire thread? I am now curious. :)
  6.     Hi ShazScott1980, Is it your theory that Victor already knew about Nathan? If Victor already knew then how does he factor into Nathan’s murder? If Victor knew about Eva’s past, then how do you think he would have reacted toward Monica? I am not sure that Victor would have been able to keep an even temper with Monica if he found out about her deceiving him all those years. I also don’t think that Victor would have purposely been in cahoots with Monica and Stanton. I think that if he did indeed find out Eva’s past, he would have killed Nathan alone. I don’t think that he would have included others in the commission of a crime. He is a cop by profession and I think that his instincts would have kicked in. I don’t think that he would have purposely put other individuals at risk of losing their freedom by helping him commit the murder. I think that if Victor did commit the murder, he would have done it alone, covered up the crime as best he could (by cleaning up the murder scene, taking away crucial evidence, maybe even the video tapes of Eva’s rapes, or photos, etc.) and then he would have counseled everyone about “lawyering†up. I also don’t think that Victor would have been able to continue to have a cordial relationship with Monica if he found out about the secrets Monica and Eva had both been keeping from him. I think that would have left him disillusioned with Ms. Monica and he would have dropped the “secret†torch he had been carrying for all these years. What do you think?
  7. Hi LNCronan, I think in this instance Victor would have kept his emotions under a tight rein and he would have put his “cop†face on. If Victor accidentally found out via the Detective I think he would have been trying to process that horrendous information and thus wouldn’t have said anything to help the detectives. He could have been in shock but he had also just witnessed the situation that occurred in Eva’s apartment and her “reactions†to the news about Nathan’s death. I don’t think that Victor would have anything (or given away any reactions about the news he just heard) because he would have realized the gravity of the situation and because he didn’t know what was going on, any admission (of knowing or not knowing) could inadvertently put his daughter under suspicion. I think that initially, Victor would have been a huge jumble of emotions. He would have been angry, enraged at the thought of what exactly happened to his daughter during those years. Then he would have been angry about how both Eva and Monica kept this secret from him. He would have grieved for the loss of his daughter’s innocence and for all of the pain and suffering she had to endure. Then he would have asked himself what he did to Eva to make her afraid to come and talk to him. He would ask himself what he did wrong as a dad. If he had been crying during the night, he would have been crying quietly. I don’t think that either Eva or Carey would have heard him. Both of them had been taking medications night. Finally once the night had passed and the morning was breaking, Victor could have reached a cold state of calm. He would have laced up his shoes to go for a run all the while trying to figure out a plan how to help his daughter and/or the person who killed Nathan cover up the crime. I think that Victor would have had to ask himself some hard questions about his daughter and what her involvement, if any, was in Nathan’s murder. I state that is a possibility because if Eva was capable of keeping such a terrible secret from her dad, then what other secrets could she capable of keeping. In Victor’s mind, Eva’s terrible reaction could have been an admission of something more serious. Now I am just stating an alternative theory to Victor’s reaction to finding out about Eva’s past on the night the detectives came to visit. I don’t personally believe this to be the case but it is an alternate way of looking at things. What does everyone think?
  8. Hi LNCronan, Your theory is interesting. You mentioned that Sylvia would post clues. Thus far your theories have accounted for the press and the newspaper, but what about the pen? How does that factor into your theories? It is very clear that Sylvia doesn’t do something for no reason. So I wonder what the pen could be about. Could it be some kind of written communication between Eva and Gideon, or between Gideon and the press, or Eva and the press? Could the pen be a “Cross†pen (brand and surname no pun intended)?
  9. Hi LNCronan, Thanks for starting a new thread. This should be a lot of fun! :)
  10. Hi LNCronan, You make an interesting point about whether Eva moved in with her father or not. We know that Eva's father paid for her University, I just wonder whether that would include her living expenses. We also know that Eva went to San Diego State University which is a land grant university so the tuition fees would be less expensive than at a private university. What I wonder is whether Eva did actually move in with Victor because she wanted to spend time with her dad, get a change of scenery (i.e. away from her controlling mother's ways, her past, etc.) I am not sure that Monica would have let Eva go under lesser circumstances. Nathan could still have been a potential threat to Eva and as such it wouldn’t make sense for Monica to allow her daughter to leave one state and go to another when there is a real dangerous threat that Nathan could still be after her. I could however see Monica agreeing to Eva leaving the State if she was to move in with her father. I also don’t know how Victor could have found out about Eva’s wild ways and out of control behaviour unless he was there witnessing it for himself. If your argument for Eva being of legal age was the reason for her moving out then I can’t see Victor having leverage with his daughter to get help. If she wasn’t under his roof, having her bills paid by him, then where is the motivation for Eva to get help? If Eva lived in a dorm as you suggested, then the most that Victor would probably get see to his daughter would be on weekends and holidays. Most parents, who visit their kids, visit on weekends and holidays. Something must have been going on in Eva’s life that was affecting her “daily†life which prompted her dad to get her help. Victor is a cop who doesn’t make a lot of money, but he is also in debt (I suspect up to his eyeballs with Eva’s student debt). So I can’t see him also paying for another apartment for Eva to live in when it would be cheaper to have his daughter live with him. If you also factor in all of Eva’s counseling and therapy he had to pay for, I don’t that his dollars would stretch far enough to grant all of Eva’s wishes. What does everyone think?
  11. Hi LNCronan, Here is what we know for sure: • Nathan was a scumbag who got murdered but yes he was murdered. • I didn’t say that the cops wouldn’t investigate his murder; in fact I stated very early on in this process that his murder would be investigated. • I simply don’t think that his murder would be investigated with the same ferocity as another one that involved an “innocentâ€. • The OJ S****** trial was a HUGE spectacle for 2 reasons: 1. OJ was a famous athlete who was greatly admired by the public. 2. Nicole S & Ron G. were innocent people who were BRUTALLY murdered. • The only correlation between these two cases is that Gideon is a famous man. Nathan was a horrible criminal who committed heinous crimes and won’t be missed by anyone. • Any DA’s office that takes on this case and LOSES would be committing career suicide! One need only look at the OJ trial and the DA’s office to see the effects that trial had on their careers. Ms. Marcia is now doing stints on some court reporting show…that’s not a promotion! It is a demotion! • I can’t see a DA taking on a case like this without rock solid evidence. It will be really interesting to see just how technical Sylvia gets with the next book. Each of us is sitting in our respective corners waiting to see how things will turn out. :)
  12. Hi LNCronan, I think that the most the police can prove this thus far is: • Eva was seen going into Gideon’s apartment building. There is no proof that Eva actually had face to face contact with Gideon (although we the reader know differently) in that the police have no physical proof, videotape, eye witness accounts. I wonder if the media actually got a hold of this story whether the public opinion would sway in Gideon’s favour. Once the information about Eva’s rapes and torture was revealed, I am not sure that there would be a person in the State of New York that would convict this man. I could just see the media circus that would accompany a story like this. Picture it, a million Gideon supporters; high financiers, heads of charities Gideon publically/privately supports, friends, restaurateurs, etc. all parading themselves up and down the media boulevard proclaiming the good deeds of the wrongly accused Gideon. All the national news/media outlets would have a freaking field day. Everyone has suggested the idea that Gideon might confess in order to save Eva. Has anyone considered the possibility that Eva might confess all of the secrets about her past in order to save Gideon? Thus far, Gideon has been the one chasing and rescuing Eva and protecting her from her past. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Eva were to lay down her shame and guilt and secrets in order to save her man?
  13. Hi LNCronan, I don’t think the scenario presented would be in Victor’s character. On one hand Victor is methodical. He would have conferred or been helping “professional colleagues†to catch a killer all while he was discussing all of the gory details of his daughter’s past without even batting an eye lash. The way the theory is laid out, a person would think that Victor would be willing to put his daughter in harm’s way (all in the name of solving the murder of the scumbag who brutally raped and tortured his daughter) and then miraculously would figure out a way to make sure that his daughter got immunity so that Gideon could be prosecuted all in the name of justice. On the other hand Victor is supposed to completely fall apart at the thought of hearing terrible news about his daughter. Victor is either methodical and all about his career and the pursuit of justice or he’s a dad first and foremost. Which is it? I think that if Victor went “postal†he certainly wouldn’t do it around his daughter. He would know that she already had enough to deal with; his years of experience with the police force would have taught him that. I think that if he got upset, he would have done it in the privacy of his own space, without anyone around see this. Then I think he would have gotten really angry and maybe violently angry. I certainly think that Victor would do anything to help is daughter. If he couldn’t help her when she was little he could certainly be in the position to help her now. Cops make great actors and liars. They lie to suspects all the time to get them to confess. Why would’ this situation not be any different. Could Victors’ silence be an act of compassion? If Eva didn’t feel comfortable revealing this part of her past couldn’t there be a reason for it? Could Victor realize that and therefore makes like the happy father for the weekend…all the while he realizes what he must do? Could his silence be Victor trying to figure out his next move? That would be a lot of horrible information to process in a short while. What do you think?
  14. Hi everyone, It occurred to me that everyone has made mention of Gideon’s hair preferences, but Gideon himself never made mention of it. Could it be that everyone assumed that Gideon had a preference because they automatically made a correlation between Gideon’s mom and Corinne having black hair? Could Gideon be orchestrating the entire “rouse†in order to distract the public from delving into his private life too much? It seems that Gideon controls absolutely everything in his life. What does everyone think?
  15.     Hi LNCronan, Do you think that the NYPD would call the FBI to have Gideon and Eva tracked if they left the jurisdiction? Gideon hasn’t been charged with a crime and neither has Eva. They are both free to travel to and fro without any reservations or restrictions. Again, I would wonder whether anyone would really care enough to pursue one murder. By all accounts Nathan was a dangerous man who was stalking Eva. He was going to kill her eventually and every sign pointed to the fact that he was planning on doing so. So someone did society a favour and “offed†a man who probably would have wound up in the electric chair/or with a needle in his arm (from some other heinous crime he probably committed as well).
  16. Hi LNCronan, Your theory is plausible with one exception; do you think that Gideon had all of his employees sign non-disclosure agreements in which case Gideon wouldn’t have to worry so much about his disguises? I still find it hard to believe that Gideon could be that good at disguising himself. I also don’t think that the police department would be foolish enough to just sit out front and wait for Gideon to enter and exit the premises. If Gideon might try to disguise himself and use the service exit, could it be possible that the police might take that into consideration as well and that they might have surveillance posted at all entrances and exits?
  17. Hi LNCronan, Do you really think that the NYPD would go to all o that trouble and expense for just one murder? The type of scenario that you are suggesting would normally be reserved for a huge mafia take down. Nathan was just one man and a scumbag at that. I am not so sure that a police chief would want to spend that kind of money on solving one murder. I also want to clarify something with you. If a murder occurred in a specific police precinct (let’s say New York City) that was later confirmed to be part of an organized crime, does that mean that the FBI is automatically called in? That doesn’t make sense to me. I would think that the police department would want the credit for solving that crime. If you could explain the process, that would be great. Asides from Detective Graves’ speculations, she has nothing, no tangible proof and no evidence. Again I can’t see some DA presenting a case before the Grand Jury, not unless he/she was on a suicide mission. DA’s are elected in your country and as such if someone lost such a famous public figure and so much money was spent in order to go on a “fishing expedition†I think there would be huge backlash from the public and specific government parties.
  18. Hi everyone, After reading the books, I wonder if Eva got fed up with her mother’s controlling ways. That’s why she went to live with her father. What I want to know is; why did Eva leave San Diego to fly all the way to New York. Somehow I don’t know that Monica/Stanton buying Eva an apartment would have been incentive enough. Could it be that Eva was running from her “second†past (her wild partying days, etc.)? I wonder if we will get to see a little more insight into that part of Eva’s past. What state did Monica live with Nathan’s father? Could Eva have been running from that situation as well? I also wonder where Monica could have been that naive to think that the court system would be enough to prevent Nathan from contacting Nathan. The only physical way that Nathan could have been prevented from contacting Eva in the earlier days, could possibly have been if he was sent to a juvenile detention centre. If Nathan was still young his father may have had some control over Nathans’ actions but once he was disowned, Nathan was free to do as he pleased. What does everyone think?
  19.     Hi LNCronan, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Stanton legally bribed everyone; I think that there are some things that should remain private. There are so many people in today’s society that seem to have no problem revealing confidential information if the “price is rightâ€. One only need look at today’s media to see one “scandal†or other being revealed by a “confidential sourceâ€. I agree with you, it shouldn’t have to come down to a monetary transaction in order to get a person to honour the terms of their employment or to even have the common decency to say nothing. As far as Stanton is concerned, the worst that can happen to a person who signs a confidential agreement all he can do is sue the person. The only situation that could have criminal consequences is if a physician leaks patient records without the consent (of the patient).
  20.     Hi Mrs. CrossXxXxX, Thus far everyone seems to think that Dr. Lucas may have been the grad student that abused Gideon. I am not sure where he fits in exactly either. From my point of view, Sylvia hasn’t written enough about Dr. Lucas for me to definitively speculate one way or another. What we know for sure is that Gideon had an affair with Dr. Lucas’s wife and that Gideon stated that Dr. Lucas alienated him from his family. The rest has been speculation. :)
  21.     Hi MicheleWV, OHHHH, that’s a good theory! I like the idea that Gideon may have known about Eva’s past before she told him. What I wonder is how does that theory account for the way Gideon reacted when Eva told him about her past? When she told him that she had been raped repeatedly, Gideon suddenly snapped the wine glass stem with his hand (a shocked and quiet but violent reaction to the news). If Gideon already knew about Eva’s past, then why would he have such a startled, sudden reaction? He already would have known about the details of Eva’s rape, unsealing the records would have revealed everything…right? To me Gideon’s reaction would have indicated that Eva blind-sided him with her admission and that he had no idea about her past. What do you think? What does everyone think? You mentioned that Gideon admitted seeing photos of Eva, but the real question is did Gideon only see the photos Nathan had shown him or during his “personal investigation†did Gideon uncover other photographic evidence of Eva’s rape? I suspect that the only photos Gideon saw were the ones Nathan showed him. I think that is what enraged him and then forced the fight in his office. I think he lost his cool and snapped when he saw the photos but somehow managed to recompose himself and ended the fight with one clean blow to Nathan’s face. What do you think? What does everyone think? I guess the biggest question is; if Gideon didn’t kill Nathan, then what is his deep dark secret? What is Gideon so afraid of? Does anyone have any theories, suggestions?
  22. Hi LNCronan, Since the advent of September 11th the FAA has gotten really hyper vigilant about how they handle passengers on commercial flights and yes even private flights. So if Gideon supposedly booked a private flight with one of his jets and said jet arrived at its location without Gideon, the pilot would face serious fines. I don’t know how much leeway the FAA would give Gideon because of his status and wealth. I suspect that he wouldn’t get too much wiggle room, especially if he pulled that kind of stunt more than once. Every passenger also has to fly with some kind of identification so the body double stunt wouldn’t work. If someone tried to pass themselves off as Gideon and that flight got check, I couldn’t even image the world of trouble that individual would be in. Regardless of wealth and regardless of where someone is flying, every person has to produce his/her driver’s license (or passport) in order to board a flight. In Canada, a person cannot board any flight; either domestic or international, without producing her/his passport. That is why flights can often be delayed. Airlines check and double check their passenger lists before take-off and they have to submit any revisions before the flight commences. They are usually handing that list off to the gate attendant just before they close the airplane doors and the airplane pushes away from the gate. If the airline couldn’t account for their passengers and something terrible happened, that airline would face huge fines and possible criminal charges. The multiple drivers’ scenario seems far more doable from a logistic perspective. Gideon could dispatch any number of cars all with men of similar height, weight, hair and eye colour and boom! Then watch the police department scramble to try and tail all of those cars. It would be like watching an episode of the “Keystone Copsâ€.
  23. Hi LNCronan, That’s my whole point, why would Monica lie to Eva about Nathan being in New York? How does that further her cause? How does that protect Eva? Monica of all people knows how dangerous Nathan is. Yet she doesn’t say anything to her own daughter about the man who caused her so much harm in the past? That makes no sense me. I also don’t understand why Monica/Stanton agreed to pay the blackmail. Again Monica of all people knows that Nathan is dangerous. He brutally raped and tortured Eva and killed her cat so why on earth would Monica believe a man who is very capable of being dangerous and even murder? It is also clear that Nathan was a liar. He lied to cover up his crimes when he was raping and torturing Eva. He most likely kept lying to all the adults around until he finally got caught. Monica would have known this. She experienced the effect of Nathan’s lies first hand and she also saw what happened as a result of all those lies. So why would she believe an even more seasoned criminal now? If anything, Nathan has had all these years to perfect the art of lying and committing heinous crimes without getting caught. Of all people I think that Dr. Peterson would absolutely agree that drastic measures would need to be taken in order to protect Eva. Nathan had proven himself over and over again, that he was dangerous and was capable of escalating his crimes to murder. I don’t think that Dr. Peterson would have been in favour of keeping Eva in the dark. If anything, I think he would have blown his stack if he found about Monica’s stunt. What do you think?
  24. Hi LNCronan, How did Monica get duped by Nathan (if you can call it that)? Monica must have known that Nathan was in town before Gideon because the timeline wouldn’t make sense any other way. I think Nathan picked to approach Monica first because she was an easy target. He could use Monica’s love for her daughter and guilt about the past as leverage against her. What Nathan probably didn’t count on was Stanton. No one responded in the way that he expected. It could be that Nathan’s past experiences taught him that every time he stamped his feet people gave in. He wouldn’t have counted on the fact that Monica would have grown emotionally and also grown wiser. What I find most odd is that Monica, Stanton, and Gideon have all this money yet none of them sought to provide top of the line security for Eva? Before anyone says anything, I don’t believe that someone “shadowing†Eva is considered top of the line. In order for someone to receive the best security, they need to be kept in the loop so they can understand; what the threat is (Nathan) and what steps need to be taken in order for the threat to be neutralized. No one sought to do that for Eva. Why? It is obvious that Gideon’s security team grossly failed when Carey was attacked, but still no one sought to inform Eva? Again why? Even when Eva was having her “one sided†heart to heart with her mother, her mother remained tight lipped about what had been going on. It was only when Eva started asking specific questions, her mother offered short, brief and almost vague answers. Monica didn’t volunteer any information even after the threat of Nathan was eliminated. Why? If Monica wasn’t responsible for Nathan’s death, why be so secretive? If that’s not enough, Eva had to specifically call her mother and ask her about the day she, Megumi and her mother went to lunch. Monica still didn’t volunteer any information until Eva specifically asked her whether she saw Nathan. Why? Monica went from one extreme to another. She went from being paranoid about her daughter’s safety to ….nothing. She stopped the constant communication with her daughter and never informed her when her daughter was in danger. I think that Monica knew her daughter well. She would have figured that Eva would have assumed that Monica stopped calling obsessively because she had finally taken Dr. Peterson’s advice, but all the while Monica was up to something else. It seems that Monica knows her daughter better than Eva knows herself. Monica also would have known that Eva wouldn’t have confronted her mother about Nathan because she wouldn’t want to make her mother feel any guiltier than she already did. Point…Match…Game! Monica just maneuvered everyone without them even knowing it. In some ways this woman really is brilliant. What does everyone else think?
  25.     Hi ShazScott1980, How was Monica protecting Eva by not telling her about Nathan? How was that specific action/ sor lack there of supposed to help Eva? What is your theory? :)
