Hi Gigi and thanks for your comments.

What prompted me to say what I did is an interview I read a little while back with a British actor--I think his name is Rupert something--who was known as a leading man.  He said that coming out was the worst thing he ever did for his career.  He was sorry he came out professionally. I guess because my brother is gay I think a lot about these issues.  He is a very successful businessman and he has to hide his sexuality even though he is married and with the same man for 23 years.  It's all about money and what TPTB think will make the most.  I also remember when Sean Hayes won a Tony for his role and the NY Times criticized because he played a straight man.  That was maybe 2 or 3 years ago.  I think Europeans are more advanced than we are here in the US.

Yes, that is rupert everett. He was in my best friend's wedding with Julia Roberts...he was her gay best friend.

Hi GLH  :)

all I can say to your thoughts is : what a pity, what a waste in human potential!!! it's the male TPTBs of the world who feel threatened (I can't figure out by what) and simply refuse to accept the state of reality. Homosexuality exists and there's nothing sinful or immoral in it.  If women ruled the world these things would never happen!!! I'm Italian and homosexuals have to cope with the religious issue as well. The Pope is here. and he doesn't make things easier for anyone.Even Spain, the most Catholic country in Europe, has already introduced gay matrimony (is it the right term?)

What I find most interesting is people here have already changed their outlook on these issues, why then our institutions are always falling behind?

Hi Gabri--

You are so right.  I live on the east coast of the US where people are more liberal.  But, one of my closest friends lives about 100 miles away in the central part of Pennsylvania.  It is sickening how anti everything they are there.  Much of our country still is struggling with many issues Europeans have long ago settled.  And, yes, if women ran things, I think the world would certainly been more accepting.

I am rereading the series.  After reading here the past few months I decided to reread with new insight.  Maggie and Corinne are just so despicable.  I don't know women like them but I certainly know they exist.  The scene that grabbed me was the first time Gideon had his major nightmare at Eva's.  Knowing what I know now, my heart just broke for both of them.  What I did wonder is why Gideon never went for therapy before.  Could it be that until Eva he never spent a night with a woman before?  I haven't gotten to the part where they discuss this and I forget.  I just love these 2.

I think Gideon never went to therapy, because was abused by one. Or rather the trainee of a therapist/shrink. He only goes to Dr. Peterson because Eva suggested it to him. It is possible that he never spent a night with a woman before, since he used to have loose flings. But how about Corinne? They were engaged for 2 years, and it seems very odd that he did not sleep in the same bed as her during that time.

Hi Moonfeather,

You are right about Gideon not seeing a therapist because he was abused by one, but he started seeing Dr. Peterson because he wanted to get better for Eva, he had started going because of the nightmare that he had and Eva walked out. He didn't sleep with Corinne always came up with an excuse as to why they shouldn't spend the night together.

There's a part in BTY where he explained to Eva about his relationship with Corrine and how they only ever had se.x in the f*** pad hotel and that he always made an excuse not to spend the night such as an early class. He said that's why he knew they couldn't get married because how would he get around the issue of seperate rooms. He never wanted anyone to see him have his nightmares either!

Gideon didn't trust psychologists because of the abuse.  We only know about his abuser Hugh, the doctoral student.  It is very possible that the doctor knew about the abuse too.  There is still a lot of story to tell.  (Come on book #4)  We do know that Corinne wanted to spend the night but Gideon always used the excuse about early morning classes for leaving.  Gideon told Eva that he couldn't share his secrets with anyone before Eva.  The reason he couldn't marry Corinne was because he wouldn't explain the violent nightmares and, therefore couldn't explain why he needed to sleep alone.

I just read the part where Gideon explained Corinne to Eva.  What is interesting is that Corinne never pushed Gideon on any issue. How can you marry someone you know so little about?  I know this is a novel, but that is interesting to me.

So everyone thinks that Gideon never sought any other therapist because of one bad one?  After what I just read, I think he never expected to find a relationship and so the nightmares would just be his secret.  He would use his fu**pad for s*x and that would be it.  Denial for sure.  I think Sylvia had that spot on for men.  They really don't like to face issues.  Head in the sand and all of that.

I think corrine was so in love with Gideon she would take anything she could have with him, she obviously realised something was amiss and hence called off the engagement hoping it would get his butt in gear but we all know that backfired (thankfully!!)

Defo true about Gideon burying his head in the sand. At one point did he not say to Eva that he never felt his past was a problem until he met her? He didn't think it affected his life in anyway, it wasn't until Eva forced him to open up and also how his nightmares were affecting him that he probably realised he might actually need some help!

Very well said, and that fact that he realized that he wanted to be with her more than anything!!!

Hi GHL, Hi Moonfeather

Gideon himelf says in RIY that Corinne broke their engagement because she had never been allowed to stay over at his f**k pad. She made a runner hoping he would run after her, but he let her go,,,, HA! HA!
